Meeting ESG goals through green building

Green building has provided a framework for building projects that are more efficient, less polluting, and healthier for their occupants. This track record has earned LEED an important place in the rapidly evolving ESG reporting world.

ESG: Environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors are taken into account by people or companies when making investments so that they can put their money into stocks that will have a broader impact on the world, and provide a financial return for the investor.

Nexus with LEED

LEED is a critical factor in ESG reporting; by supporting certified buildings, companies can save money, improve efficiency, lower carbon emissions and create healthier places for people. LEED buildings are critical to addressing climate change and meeting ESG goals, enhancing resilience and supporting more equitable communities.

Additionally, LEED helps investors meet their ESG goals by providing them with a robust and globally recognized green building framework to measure and manage their real estate performance.

  • The LEED framework encompasses social, economic and environmental performance indicators and strategies with a clear, data-driven means of benchmarking and communicating progress.
  • LEED certification at the volume scale was created to meet the needs of companies and organizations looking to institute green building at the portfolio level. Using this option streamlines the LEED certification process by focusing on similarities in building design, operations and delivery. It also serves as a tool to integrate sustainable policies and ESG principles at the organizational level.
  • LEED for Cities and Communities helps local leaders create responsible, sustainable and specific plans for natural systems, energy, water, waste, transportation and many other factors that contribute to the quality of life. The programs revolutionize city and community planning, development and operations to improve their overall sustainability and quality of life.
  • LEED-certified buildings can use Arc to improve and benchmark with their peers, as well as to verify LEED performance on an annual basis to keep their certification up to date. Projects not yet certified can also use Arc to make sustainability improvements over time to eventually achieve LEED certification. Arc Climate Risk tools allow users to understand, track and manage climate risks associated with their buildings and portfolios. They help asset managers, owners, and other stakeholders comply with new reporting expectations, such as recommendations from the Financial Stability Board Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD).
