Teachers Village is the first phase of the SoMa (South of Market Street) master plan prepared by Richard Meier & Partners Architects LLP ("RMP.") RMP designed Buildings 1, 2, 6, and 7 and KSS Architects designed the interior of Building 2 and Buildings 5 and 8. Building 2 received USGBC LEED Silver for Schools designation on 1/31/2017. The Teachers Village Project as a whole received LEED-ND Silver designation on 12/15/2017. Teachers Village is recognized by the USGBC as a green and sustainable neighborhood development project that incorporates green infrastructure, energy conservation, and innovative design to create a walkable, transit-oriented, mixed-use community in the heart of downtown. The project incorporated 53 percent recycled content in its infrastructure, and saves over 12 percent annually in energy savings as well as over 26 percent annually in water savings through efficient plumbing fixtures. The project achieves over 100 percent heat-island reduction via special roofing materials used on all the buildings. Additional features such as several public plazas and a common piazza, as well as a shuttle service and Zipcars for teachers and residents of Teachers Village also contributed to the overall sustainability ranking. The project succeeds in creating a new, vibrant and walkable community of like-minded individuals who teach, live, learn, work and shop in downtown Newark.
