(North) USGBC & AIA - Green Schools Panel Discussion

- EST

Speakers: Mark Korinek, C.P.M. & John Sagebiel, Ph.D.

Mark is the Director of Operations for Carson City Schools. The Carson City School District has been involved with Energy Efficiency and Sustainability for many years. They were one of the first districts to deploy an early form of performance contracting with their own financing in the early 1990's. The 2014 Benchmark report revealed a reduction of energy use by nearly 50% from 7 years previous and the second lowest of any school district in the state. The district's Strategic Plan, Empower Carson City emphasizes sustainable beliefs and the Sustainability Action Team (SAT) was born from it. Initiatives that SAT is working on include Eco-literacy, District-wide recycling and Waste reduction programs, garden and habitat programs and community partnerships.

Dr. John Sagebiel is the Assistant Director for Environmental Programs at UNR and holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry. Through this work he began broadening his research interests into all aspects of human impacts on the earth and the nexus between water, energy, food, transportation and human exposure. This broader sustainability focus led him to his position at UNR which began as the Environmental Affairs Manager. He has a strong interest in communicating complex scientific issues to less technical audiences and has taught several experimental courses with former UNR English professor Scott Slovic to look at literary and other approaches to teaching the complex concepts of sustainability to broader audiences. He also takes his work home, having designed and built his zero-net energy home which he built in tools to assess the performance of the home and optimize his energy use.

Lunch will be provided.
