USGBC recently announced a call for nominations for the local Community Leadership Awards for all locations in the USGBC East North Central region.

Now, we are seeking LEED professionals to volunteer as judges for the project-based awards in the USGBC East North Central region (USGBC Detroit Region, USGBC Indiana, USGBC Ohio, the Illinois Green Alliance and USGBC West Michigan). Judges do not have to be from these communities to be eligible for this opportunity. Judging panels for each community include both local leaders and experts from around the globe.

These awards celebrate excellence from projects, people and partner organizations that are working to create better buildings and better lives for all in their local communities. Project award judges represent leaders and stakeholders in the USGBC community with different perspectives and expertise in a variety of technical areas, markets and sectors. Good candidates for this volunteer role are

USGBC members (either employees of a member organization or individual community members).
Current LEED credential holders (LEED Fellow, LEED AP with specialty or LEED Green Associate).
Knowledgeable about green building and market trends.
Associated with multiple types of LEED-certified projects as a project team member or owner.
Analytical, fair, objective and willing to recuse themselves from judging projects where there is a real or perceived conflict of interest.
From either within or outside the community where the projects they are judging are located.

Judges review, score and award projects based on the following criteria:

Certification achievement (up to 10 points): This includes the LEED certification version and level, recertification or other certifications awarded.
Goals (up to 5 points): Project scope and goals demonstrate a sustainable leadership approach.
Strategies (up to 5 points): Strategies are used that push the envelope of sustainability, health and wellness, resilience, and/or equity.
Process and synergies (up to 5 points): Project challenges are resolved with an integrative process and innovative solutions.
Performance (up to 5 points): Data shows the completed project performs at a high standard and measures ongoing performance.
Lessons learned (up to 5 points): Project demonstrates excellence and/or unique lessons learned within a specific location, market, sector or building use type.

Volunteer judges will review around 5–15 project nominations between June 2 and June 8. A discussion panel of judges will convene on June 9 at 12 p.m. ET to discuss the nominations and select award winners.
