If you’ve visited the Green Apple website recently, you may have noticed that we’ve made some changes. We’ve taken the lessons learned from thousands of projects—impacting around 4 million students—and transformed the site into a toolkit that any changemaker at a school can use to run a sustainability-themed service day for students and the community.

In line with the Center for Green Schools mission to support and train the individuals making change at the school system level, Green Apple is now fully in the hands of people who are leading in their communities.

Looking for inspiration for your next project?

Ibrahim Kronfol of Dar Al Handasah Shair and Partners (Dar) is a leader who serves as the education and awareness chair with the Lebanon Green Building Council. Notably, Kronfol is a 2018 Green Apple Day of Service Award Winner, a 2020 LEED Fellow and a Green Apple community organizer and leader. He has been participating in the Green Apple program since its inception in 2012 and has played a significant role in helping the Center for Green Schools achieve its mission.

Recently, Kronfol and his colleagues led several impactful Green Apple projects for their communities to celebrate 10 years of green school service. Highlights from these inspiring Green Apple day of service projects are below.

The American School of Creative Science

In March, the Emirates Coalition for Green Schools—through the Emirates Green Building Council—collaborated with Dar to hold a Green Apple project to teach students about indoor air quality at the American School of Creative Science.

This project engaged over 50 students and included activities for students to create their own outdoor pollution catcher and participate in an indoor air quality inspection walk around their school.

The International School of Choueifat in Dubai–Al Sufouh, United Arab Emirates

Also in March, volunteers with the Emirates Green Building Council, in collaboration with Dar, held a Green Apple project for third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade students at the International School of Choueifat–Dubai. This project focused on upcycling waste. Students were challenged to create innovative projects to reuse waste in creative ways.

Students who demonstrated the most creative waste transformations received green champion certificates and a medal.

Sadhana School in Pune, India

In mid-January, India’s Sustainability Movement volunteers held a Green Apple day of service at Sadhana School in Pune.

The day started with a sustainability awareness presentation followed by a series of hands-on activities—including a solar energy demonstration, a waste sorting and composting activity, and a tree planting—that showed them the core principles of sustainability. Participating students learned the basics of sustainability and green buildings.

The International School of Choueifat in Choueifat, Lebanon

As part of the 2022–2023 Green Apple effort, volunteers from the Lebanon Green Building Council and Dar held another Green Apple project for fourth, fifth and sixth grade students at the International School of Choueifat–Choueifat, in February.

This day of service focused on waste management, circularity and upcycling. Students were challenged to create their own projects related to waste management and to consider how it impacts their schools.
